Almanac: L.A.’s freeway “Stack”

On September 22, 1953, the world’s first Four-Level Interchange highway design (also known as “The Stack”) opened in Los Angeles, promising an easing of congestion as it allowed drivers in 32 lanes to switch from one freeway to another without ever having to cross another lane of traffic.
