Putnam Co Director of Schools Corby King discusses learning loss caused by COVID

As the state legislature prepared for a special session on education, figures about learning loss came forward. For example, Tennessee third graders – a 50% drop in reading, a projected 65% drop in math proficiency with COVID one of the main reasons. But what do the numbers really mean? Is the data there to show that kind of learning loss? Putnam County’s Director of Schools is Corby King.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: Reading Proficiency

Dr. Penny Schwinn discusses reading proficiency issues brought by the pandemic.

Monday, the General Assembly will begin a special session on education. Specifically, issues facing education as a result of COVID-19. One of those is reading – an estimated 50% drop in reading proficiency among Tennessee students since the beginning of the pandemic. But the problem goes much deeper than that. We look at reading and Tennessee’s young people with State Education Commissioner Dr. Penny Schwinn.
