State Senator Paul Bailey discusses the 111th General Assembly & its new topics.

Tuesday, lawmakers from across the Volunteer State will gather in Nashville as the 111th General Assembly will convene. There are a lot of new faces in Nashville – 28 new members in the House of Representatives. The 33 member Senate has four new members. Republicans hold super majorities in both bodies. How will this new legislature tackle issues? What are the issues that will make news over the next several months? We get a preview from State Senator Paul Bailey.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: The Sycamore Institute

Talking health care issues impacting the Upper Cumberland with Mandy Pellegrin.

As 2019 begins, the state legislature expected to be very involved in examining the cost OF and the access TO health care in Tennessee. As they examine the issues….they have a research arm to help them understand the issues of health care, circa 2019. The sycamore institute is a non partisan group designed to examine health care issues, the impact on Tennesseans, and what kind of effects arise from legislative pursuits. Mandy Pellegrin is the Policy Director of the Sycamore Institute.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: Autism Tennessee Part Two

Babs Tierno discusses Autism Tennessee & the many services it provides families.

New science shows Autism more prevalent than ever though. The study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics….said 1 in 40 children have Autism. That’s up from the previous estimate of 1 in 59 children. More disturbing, the study found that 30 percent of those diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum….are not getting treatment. Babs Tierno understands the challenges of Autism personally….and professionally. She leads Autism Tennessee which serves autistic families with support, education, and advocacy.

How does Tennessee promote access to healthcare…..care and prevention that may already be available….that isn’t being used. In our community….the Upper Cumberland Primary Care Project tries to serve the uninsured, the underinsured and those able to pay. We explore its services with Regional Director Deborah Johnson.

A dog may seem like a good gift this season, but new families may be unprepared.

68 million dogs lived in the United States at the turn of the century. Today, that number is almost 90 million. We talk with Karen McMeekin of Crossville’s A Time For Pause, and Sharon Cravens, president of Jamestown’s Best Friend’s Sanctuary, to find out what their organizations are doing to educate families across the Upper Cumberland on the responsibilities of not just owning dogs, but knowing where they come from as well.

Healthcare isn’t a new issue, we talk about ACO’s with Dr. Brent Stanton

As we prepare to head to the polls for another election, one of the issues at the forefront for many is healthcare. We continue our talk about affordable healthcare. There are however several groups of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers, who are trying to find a different way to make healthcare more affordable for those needing public assistance called Accountable Care Organizations or ACO’s. They work together voluntarily to give coordinated high-quality care to their Medicare patients. Dr. Brent Staton serves with the Cumberland Center for Healthcare Innovation in Cookeville.
