Today In Upper Cumberland Podcast: Workforce Development Program

Local business leaders…educators…and government officials gathered together some ten years ago to look at how the Upper Cumberland could better help its workforce serve local employers.

Not only would that focus allow the area to grow through new industry and companies locating here, but the effort would help prepare employees better for existing jobs. That effort has continued…a collaboration between private and public entities…creating successful outcomes for the region.

How did the group come together and what’s being done to move the process along? We visit with Dr. Myra West of TCAT, Dr. Jerry Boyd of the Putnam County Schools and Lillian Hartgrove, Vice President of Workforce Development for the Highlands Chamber of Commerce. They are members of the steering committee of the Workforce Development Program.

Today In Upper Cumberland Podcast: Babies Born Addicted To Opioids

The state of Tennessee and the Upper Cumberland region are dealing with a large addiction to opioids and pain killers. But it’s not just the lives of adult men and women being lost to this addiction.

Just like infants born addicted to illegal drugs, thousands of babies statewide are being born addicted to opioids. This can lead to lengthy hospital stays and babies that deal with withdrawal symptoms. But what are the long-term implications of these actions.

Today, the second of a two-part discussion on the topic…as we visit with Dr. Sam Barnes and Dr. James Gray. These two long-time Upper Cumberland doctors are focused on the issues surrounding opioids and how we can save the lives of these infants.

The Moose Lodge – Science Is There For All The Dads With sleepless Nights Out There!

Ok, so you’re a new dad.  Just when you think you’re about to get some peace and quiet, your little tiger wakes up and it’s pandemonium while you say whatever comes to your mind to try quiet the little Loudspeaker down. In fact you start saying things that as a grown man, you know will result in your beer buddies from permanently disqualifying you from all Man Related Activities.  So what do you do? You obviously cannot leave the little tyke in his uncomfortable state of mind but all that gibberish isn’t working. Enter “The Happy Song“. Science has come to the new dad’s rescue by creating the perfect song for the upset kiddo in your life.

Child psychologists at the University of London recently worked with the Grammy-winning singer Imogen Heap to create the perfect song to make babies happy.  They helped create four different melodies, and tested them on 26 kids to find out which one they liked most.  They did it by measuring their heart rates, and looking for cues like how much they smiled.  They also incorporated a bunch of sounds that babies responded to the most . . . like the word “boo” . . . the sound of a dog barking . . . and the sound of another baby laughing.  And they figured out the ideal tempo is 163 beats per minute.  They also wanted the lyrics to make sense, so it wouldn’t be too annoying for parents.  You probably won’t listen to it on the treadmill or anything, but it’s tolerable.  And they specifically wanted a female singer, since babies tend to like women’s voices that sound like their mom.  Once they finished, they played it for 20 different babies, and it was a huge hit.  It’s called “The Happy Song”, and sounds like the kind of thing you’d hear on a kids show.  But it’s the first song that’s been scientifically engineered to make babies happy and apparently the first song to brain wash kids into thinking Imogen Heap is their mom.

Today In Upper Cumberland Podcast: The Modern Media

A recent Gallup Poll suggested that Americans’ trust and confidence in the mass media “to report the news fully, accurately and fairly” has dropped to its lowest level in history. Just 32 percent of Americans said they had a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media.

The number stood at 72 percent in 1976.

Tennessee Tech Communications Professor Russ Witcher teaches journalism to the next generation of journalists who will live in this new environment of fake news, Facebook and Twitter reporting, analysis over reporting. He explains how the media has changed and what it means for all of us.
